Barracks Cottage

Barracks Cottage is shaped by its historic origins. A smoke-free environment, where one well-behaved dog (+) can be accommodated for additional cost. The cottage sleeps up to 4+1. Accommodation all on one level (except for 2 independent but immediate steps leading from the entrance). Cottage comprises: 1 double bedroom (king size bed) 1 single and 1 twin with single bed & smaller cabin bed (2’7" x 5’ 8”) suitable for a child/teenager or fit adult under 5’ 8” - accessed by ladder, but the build is very strong and weight is not an issue. All beds are very comfortable and made entirely from organic materials (except for the cabin bed mattress). The bathroom and bedrooms lead off a long corridor. There is an open plan living and dining area extending into the kitchen space. The large enclosed garden is safe and secure for any dogs or younger children (NB a small dog could squeeze under the gate!)

An external boiler supports the oil fired central heating and maintains constant hot water, great for kitchen needs and baths. There is a separate electric shower in the bathroom.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Cottage is let as a whole (for up to 5 + baby staying) and is not occupancy dependent.
Beds are fully prepared (visitors are asked to provide cot bedding).
A week’s cost includes mains electricity and covers the electric shower.
We ensure cottage cleaning materials are present - in kitchen and bathroom (incl a fixed hand sanitiser at the front door for use on entry and some antibacterial wipes beneath the sink).
Some tea , coffee, sugar (and coffee whitener) are available (in case milk forgotten). Salt, pepper, vinegar and cooking oil condiments should also be found….we ask visitors who use the coffee whitener, vinegar or oil to replace or make a contribution to the honesty box by phone if little used.
The Wood burner is set for lighting and a starter pack of logs, some coal and fire lighters provided.
Tea towels and a kitchen and bathroom towel are included (together with kitchen paper towels, foil and cling film + some dishwasher tablets).

REQUESTS TO VISITORS

We now ask that visitors bring their own bath and hand towels, as post lockdown all bedding is sent to a local laundry facility. (Mattress and pillow protectors remain included with all bed-ware for laundering at each changeover [2022]. Duvets and pillows are checked, rested and rotated etc., by our Cottage Keeper.)

We ask visitors to trundle the required bin to road end on a Tuesday, for early Weds am collection (and to notify in advance if this is not possible, so alternative arrangements can be made).

If dogs are part of the BC holiday, we would ask that all dog poop is scooped up into the dog or nappy sacks provided and then disposed of in general waste.

Important recycling and waste disposal details are available in the cottage.

Living areas, Kitchen & Hallway

The kitchen (off the main living/dining room) is well equipped with electric cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and washing machine/dryer.

In the living room there is a log burning stove, fire is prepared for use and we provide starter logs, coal & kindling etc., Additional logs/coal (kept at side of the cottage) can be purchased.

Bedrooms & Bathroom

Barracks Cottage has 3 bedrooms:
The ‘double’ bedroom contains a king-size bed, along with an en suite completed in 2023.
A ‘single’ bedroom contains a full-size single bed.
A ‘twin’ room contains one full-size single bed and a slightly smaller cabin bed. NB This cabin bed is approx 5’8” x 2’7” suitable for a child/teenager or ‘fit adult’ under 5’8”. (Accessed by ladder, but the build is very strong so weight is not an issue!)
All beds are very comfortable and made entirely from organic materials (except for the cabin bed mattress) and all beds are made-up/prepared.

Outdoor Space

The spacious garden, with ample parking, is overlooked by nothing other than historic Bernera Barracks. There is great space for children to play, although many visitors will be content to just relax and take in the stunning views.

In the garden you will find a splendid BBQ (which can be moved to your favourite part of the garden) with all requred cooking tools along with fuel for same which we have stored and can be purchased or replaced. Also for those balmy nights an amazing 'Barracks Henge' can be found surrounding a rustic firepit. These magnificent immovable rocks can be used by the whole family to spend some great nostalgic and memorable 'campfire' evenings!

The cottage is at the end of a private track (no passing traffic, bar an occasional tractor) so only folk on foot. The large enclosed garden is safe and secure for any dog/s or younger children. The cottage is secluded yet only a few minutes walk from the village shop and atmospheric Glenelg Inn.
